Irianese remember entry into RI<\/p>\n
JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: Local residents will commemorate the
\n37th anniversary of the transfer of sovereignty over Irian Jaya
\nfrom the Netherlands to the Republic of Indonesia through the
\nUnited Nations Temporary Executive Authority (Untea) on May 1.<\/p>\n
The Papuan Presidium Council announced on Tuesday that
\na mass prayer to celebrate the historic moment was scheduled to
\ntake place here.<\/p>\n
In a statement signed by its leaders, Theys Hiyo Eluay and Tom
\nBeanal, the council said that May 1 would be remembered as a
\nrights violation committed by the governments of Indonesia and
\nthe Netherlands and the United Nations.<\/p>\n
To anticipate possible violence during the commemoration, the
\ncouncil called on the Irianese in all parts of the province not
\nto hoist the separatist Morning Star flag.<\/p>\n
In a related development, chairman of the West Papuan Youth
\nCommittee Izak Yapsenang, dismissed the appeal.<\/p>\n
\"We are disappointed that the congress scheduled for May 1 was
\narbitrarily postponed by the council. We will encourage people to
\nhoist the Morning Star flag instead and demand leading figures to
\nannounce a transitional government,\" Izak told The Jakarta Post.
