Irian tribe joins family planning<\/p>\n
WAMENA, Irian Jaya: Despite low education levels, villagers of
\nthe Baliem Valley, Jayawijaya regency, are eagerly participating
\nin the government-sponsored family planning programs.<\/p>\n
Husin Ekawaluya, the local spokesman for the National
\nCoordinating Agency for Family Planning, told Antara in Wamena
\nthat the villagers prefer injections to condoms and pills.<\/p>\n
In addition to using \"modern contraceptives\", the members of
\nthe Dhani tribe also use their own traditional contraceptives to
\nspace births, Husin said. \"This practice really helps the local
\nfamily planning workers,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Even now, however, the tribespeople still keep their
\ntraditional contraceptives a secret, making it difficult for the
\nworkers or other health authorities to study their effectiveness
