Irian, PNG border obscure<\/p>\n
JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: Residents of three villages bordering
\nIrian Jaya and Papua New Guinea (PNG) have urged the two
\ncountries' governments to define the borderlines for their
\nvillages to prevent conflict.<\/p>\n
Villagers of Skouw Yambe, Skouw Mabo and Skouw Sae of Muara
\nTami subdistrict in Irian Jaya claim to have inherited land in
\nPNG territory, their representative, Ferdinand Mallo, said
\nSaturday.<\/p>\n
But people of nearby Papua New Guinean villages also claim to
\nhave rights over inherited land in Irian Jaya, Mallo was quoted
\nby Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
\"It's because the people (of Irian Jaya and PNG) set the
\nboundary by tradition and not by state convention,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Therefore, to avoid future conflict both governments of the
\ncountries should set a boundary and make a treaty on it, he said.<\/p>\n
Mallo conceded that the people of Wutung and Vanimo villages
\nin PNG were afraid their border land would be used by the people
\nof Skouw Sae, Skouw Mabo and Skouw Yambe villages.<\/p>\n
He said Indonesia and PNG had discussed the boundaries in
\ntheir annual border liaison meetings, but had not talked about
