        "content": "<p>Iraq expels Indonesian journalist<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>The Iraqi authorities have expelled an Indonesian journalist for<br>\nvisa violations, an Indonesian foreign ministry official said on<br>\nTuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Ministry spokesman Marty Natalegawa told The Jakarta Post that<br>\nthe journalist, Dahlan, who works for the Surabaya-based daily<br>\nSurya, was briefly detained by Iraqi troops guarding the border<br>\nwith Jordan on Monday night before he was deported.<\/p>\n<p>\"He is now safe in the Indonesian embassy in Amman,\" Marty<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Quoting Indonesian diplomats in Jordan, Marty said Dahlan had<br>\nentered Iraqi territory without a visa or the necessary<br>\ndocuments, including a special permit from President Saddam<br>\nHussein's office that is required for foreign journalists wishing<br>\nto visit the Middle Eastern country, currently under threat of<br>\nattack from the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Surya chief editor Anwar Hudiono said Dahlan, who has worked<br>\nfor the daily since 1994, managed to return to Amman in \"a<br>\ndramatic episode assisted by a friend in Baghdad.\" Anwar declined<br>\nto identify the helper for the sake of his safety.<\/p>\n<p>The reporter has now started work again, according to Anwar.<br>\nDahlan is now preparing a trip to Syria or Israel pending further<br>\ndevelopments in Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>\"God willing, he will return to Iraq somehow as he has been<br>\nassigned to cover what is now happening in Iraq. He must be there<br>\nif war erupts,\" Anwar told the Post.<\/p>\n<p>He admitted that Dahlan had no visa to enter Iraq when he left<br>\nJakarta on Jan. 25, citing procedural difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>Dahlan was reportedly accused of attempted espionage in Iraq,<br>\nwhich carries the death penalty. The daily had also asked Amnesty<br>\nInternational to help secure the release of the reporter.<\/p>\n<p>During his detention Dahlan was given a chance to call the<br>\nhousekeeper in his apartment in Amman, who then contacted Surya.<\/p>\n<p>The Indonesian government has been evacuating its citizens<br>\nfrom Iraq as the threat of war mounts. On Tuesday, 44 embassy<br>\nstaffers and students left Baghdad, Marty said.<\/p>\n<p>Following these latest evacuations, there are now only nine<br>\nIndonesian diplomats left in Baghdad.<\/p>",
