Jakarta \u2014 Jusuf Kalla, Indonesia\u2019s tenth and twelfth Vice President,\nhas conveyed his condolences over the death of Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader,\nAyatollah Ali Khamenei.<\/p>\n
Khamenei was killed following strikes by Israel and the United States\nagainst Iran on Saturday, 28 February 2026.<\/p>\n
Kalla observed that Iran\u2019s political dynamics have not been entirely\ncohesive, identifying at least three major factions within the country.\nFirst, groups supporting the government. Second, factions advocating for\nchange or reform, which have engaged in various demonstrations in recent\nmonths. Third, the old monarchist faction linked to the Pahlavi\ndynasty.<\/p>\n
\u201cNevertheless, the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is\nsomething we deeply regret. We grieve and mourn over this matter,\u201d he\nstated.<\/p>\n
Kalla also highlighted Indonesia\u2019s role in responding to the\nconflict. As a nation with a Muslim majority population and as a United\nNations member, Indonesia must call for an end to the conflict.<\/p>\n
\u201cIndonesia, as a predominantly Muslim nation and a UN member,\nnaturally endeavours to call for and pray for an immediate cessation of\nthis situation,\u201d Kalla said.<\/p>\n
Israel launched strikes on Tehran, Iran on Saturday, 28 February\n2026. Following the strikes, Israel closed its airspace and declared a\nstate of emergency.<\/p>\n
