Hostilities between the United States and Iran intensified after\nIran\u2019s Revolutionary Guards launched a missile strike against a US\ntanker in the Gulf waters. Consequently, the US tanker was reported to\nbe on fire as a result of the strike.<\/p>\n
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), in a statement, as\nreported by state television in Tehran and cited by AFP, on Thursday (5\nMarch 2026), claimed that the US tanker was \u2018hit by a missile in the\nnorthern Gulf\u2019. \u2018It is currently burning,\u2019 the IRGC statement said,\nreferring to the US tanker targeted by its forces.<\/p>\n
Independent confirmation of Iran\u2019s missile attack on the US tanker\nhas not yet been obtained.<\/p>\n
The incident occurred as the IRGC announced that it now has \u2018full\ncontrol\u2019 of the waters of the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the\nPersian Gulf to the Indian Ocean and is a vital shipping lane for oil\nand gas.<\/p>\n
The IRGC warned that any vessel attempting to traverse that strategic\nwaterway faces the risk of damage from errant missiles or drones.<\/p>\n
The Strait of Hormuz has been closed since the United States and\nIsrael launched a wave of coordinated attacks against Iran on Saturday\n28 February local time. Iran retaliated with missile and drone strikes\nagainst targets in Israel and U.S. bases in Gulf countries.<\/p>\n
Earlier, the IRGC claimed to have attacked a US warship in the Indian\nOcean, hundreds of kilometres from Iran\u2019s border. The US destroyer,\nrefuelling from a US tanker in the Indian Ocean at the time, was said by\nthe IRGC to have been struck by a Ghadr-380 missile and a Talaeieh\nmissile.<\/p>\n
The IRGC described the missile strike as a \u2018catastrophic attack\u2019\nbecause it targeted a vessel in waters more than 600 kilometres from\nIran\u2019s southern coast.<\/p>\n
With the destroyer being refuelled from the American tanker when hit\nby the missile, the IRGC intelligence conclusion was that the attack\ncaused a \u2018widespread fire\u2019 on both ships, sending plumes of smoke into\nthe sky over the sea.<\/p>\n
