In a dramatic show of defiance, hundreds of Iranian civilians have formed a human chain around the Kazerun combined-cycle power plant to protect it from potential US attacks, following President Donald Trump's ultimatum demanding Iran agree to a ceasefire, dismantle its nuclear weapons, and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. This action comes amid an escalating conflict initiated by US and Israeli strikes on Iran on 28 February 2026, which has resulted in over 2,000 deaths in Iran and retaliatory attacks causing casualties among US troops and in Israel. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran has spiked global oil prices, highlighting the conflict's severe economic implications for international trade and energy markets.

A number of Iranian citizens have formed a ‘human shield’ near a
power plant. This was done in response to threats from United States
President Donald Trump. According to CBS News on Tuesday (7 April 2026),
several citizens were seen lining up around the power plant. Iran’s Fars
News Agency, affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps,
uploaded a short video on social media showing what it described as a
‘Human chain in front of the Kazerun combined-cycle power plant’. The
video, verified by CBS News Confirmed, shows hundreds of people
responding to a call from an Iranian government official for civilians
to act as human shields in front of the country’s power plants. The
individuals were seen standing in front of the power plant. Some of them
were carrying Iranian flags. They appeared to be waving the flags in
front of the power plant. Several sources describe the Kazerun or
Kazeroon power plant as a natural gas-fuelled production facility in
southwestern Fars province, Iran. It is located near the Persian Gulf.
The war in Iran began with US and Israeli attacks on 28 February 2026.
According to Al-Jazeera, at least 2,076 people have been killed due to
US-Israeli attacks in Iran to date. Iran then retaliated by attacking
Israel and US facilities in several Gulf countries. Thirteen US soldiers
were killed and 200 others injured due to Iran’s retaliation.
Additionally, 26 people were killed in Israel and 7,183 injured.
Fatalities also occurred in several other countries. In addition to
direct retaliation, Iran also closed the Strait of Hormuz, a vital
global oil trade route. This triggered a surge in oil prices. Trump then
asked other countries to help the US reopen the Strait of Hormuz,
despite claiming to have destroyed Iran’s military power. That request
was rejected by US allies. Trump then gave Iran a deadline to agree to a
ceasefire deal or face massive attacks on power plants and other
critical infrastructure. He demanded that Tehran relinquish nuclear
weapons and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which was closed due to the US
attack. Trump set the deadline for Tuesday (7 April) night, around 8:00
PM Eastern Time in the US. That deadline falls on Wednesday (8 April)
early morning, around 3:30 AM Iranian time.
",
