Iranian arrested<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Immigration officers have arrested an Iranian
\nnational for his alleged role in a passport counterfeiting
\nsyndicate, an official said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Tangerang Immigration Office head Dody M. Wibowo said Ibrahim
\nMohammadi was arrested on Monday while applying for an Indonesian
\npassport at Dody's office.<\/p>\n
The immigration officers became suspicious after learning that
\ndata given by the Iranian were incorrect.<\/p>\n
\"Mohammadi gave wrong data. He also has no native Indonesian
\ncharacteristics,\" Dody said in a statement.<\/p>\n
He said the saga began when a man named Abdillah visited the
\nimmigration office.<\/p>\n
The latter proposed that the immigration officers issue an
\nIndonesian passport for an Indonesian named Nofan in return for
\nsome money, Dody said.<\/p>\n
The officers then said they would issue a passport only if
\nAbdillah took Nofan to the office, which he later did.<\/p>\n
Dody apparently remembered the man claiming to be Nofan as
\nMohammadi, who two years ago managed to escape at Soekarno-Hatta
\nInternational Airport prior to his deportation after being
\narrested in Bali for suspected drug trafficking.<\/p>\n
Based on a preliminary investigation, the immigration officers
\nlearned that the Iranian was a former army captain in his country
\nwho arrived here in 1997 on a Turkish passport, Dody said.<\/p>\n
During questioning, Dody told the immigration investigators
\nthat he was a member of a syndicate offering fake passports to
\npeople from warring countries.<\/p>\n
They sold the counterfeit passports for thousands of dollars
\nto people who used them to enter another country for a better
\nlife, the officer said.<\/p>\n
The nine-month-old Tangerang immigration office has arrested
\n30 foreigners so far for violating immigration laws. (jun)<\/p>",
