Iran's parliament is preparing a draft law to establish a permanent toll system for ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, charging $2 million per tanker to ensure security and assert sovereignty over this vital shipping route. This move follows Iran's rejection of a US ceasefire proposal and comes with conditions including recognition of its control over the strait, potentially escalating tensions in global trade amid ongoing conflicts. The policy underscores Iran's strategic leverage in international maritime commerce, reflecting the costs of war and bolstering its regional influence.",

The two Iranian
media outlets quoted a spokesperson from the Parliament’s Civil
Relations Committee, stating that the bill will soon be finalised by the
legislative legal team.

“According to the plan, Iran must collect fees to ensure the security
of ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz,” said one official.

“This is very natural. Just like other corridors, when goods
(imports) enter a country, a duty is paid; the Strait of Hormuz is also
a corridor. We ensure its security, and it is natural for ships and
tankers to pay that duty,” the official added.

As previously reported, Iran has rejected a ceasefire proposal from
the United States (US). Instead, Iran has set five conditions for ending
the war, one of which is recognition of Iran’s control over the Strait
of Hormuz.

On Sunday (22/3/2026), Iranian parliament member Alaeddin Boroujerdi
revealed that Tehran has begun implementing a $2 million US fee for
every tanker wishing to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. According to
The Cradle on Tuesday (24/3/2026), Iran’s policy was described by
Boroujerdi as a step towards a new “regime sovereignty” over the
strategic sea route.

“Collecting a $2 million US transit fee for ships passing through the
strait (Hormuz) reflects Iran’s strength,” Boroujerdi told IRIB, adding
that “war has costs.”
",
