Despite reaching a peace agreement with the United States, the\nIslamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has warned all ships to only\nuse shipping lanes designated by Tehran and threatened action against\nvessels straying from official corridors. The IRGC stressed that any\nshipping routes created without coordination with Iran are unacceptable\nand dangerous. The warning came after several new shipping lanes were\nannounced in the Strait of Hormuz region. The move signals that Iran is\nstill trying to maintain strategic control over one of the world\u2019s most\nimportant energy shipping lanes. The situation also shows the\nuncertainty still looming over the global shipping industry even though\nthe Iran-US conflict has de-escalated. The IRGC emphasised that only\nshipping lanes determined by Iran may be used. In addition, every vessel\nis required to coordinate with Iranian authorities through available\ncommunication channels. \u2018Sailing outside these routes is extremely\ndangerous and prohibited, and we warn all ships to strictly avoid any\nmovement outside the designated corridors,\u2019 the IRGC Navy said. The\nwarning came after a major maritime information group proposed an\nalternative shipping corridor on Saturday. However,\nthis figure is still below pre-war conditions, when more than 100 ships\ncrossed the strait daily. MarineTraffic also confirmed 32 verified\ncrossings on Tuesday by commercial and energy-carrying vessels.\nShipowners are still using a combination of Iranian, Omani, and\nInternational Maritime Organization routes when traversing the area.\n\u2018Operators are still moving cautiously rather than returning to fully\nnormal traffic patterns,\u2019 the company said. Previously, the US\nDepartment of the Treasury imposed sanctions on Iran\u2019s Persian Gulf\nStrait Authority in May. The sanctions were imposed due to indications\nof extortion practices against global maritime trade activities. US\nTreasury Secretary Scott Bessent stressed that Washington will not\ntolerate any toll system in the Strait of Hormuz. The US will also\naggressively target those involved. Analysts have also warned that\nIran\u2019s control over the Strait of Hormuz could have long-term impacts on\nglobal energy trade flows.
