US cybersecurity firm Anomali says\nTehran is likely to deploy wiper malware to cripple its adversaries\u2019\ndigital systems. In its analysis, Anomali notes that Iran has mobilised\nthe APT42 and APT33 hacker groups, linked to the Islamic Revolutionary\nGuard Corps (IRGC) and the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence (MOIS), also\nknown as MuddyWater. Another security firm, SentinelOne, estimates that\nthe attack targets could include defence networks, government, and\nintelligence in Israel and the United States in the coming days. Citing\nEuroNews, the tactic deemed most risky is the use of wiper malware,\nmalicious software designed to permanently erase data and damage\ncomputer systems. If deployed on a large scale, such an attack could\nparalyse vital services and critical infrastructure. Additionally, Iran\nmay launch DDoS attacks to disrupt online services and bolster\ndisinformation campaigns to shape global public opinion. The narratives\ncould range from accusations of war crimes by Israel to exaggerated\nclaims of military losses. While some analysts, including Sophos, say\nIranian groups often exaggerate their capabilities, they remain\nconsidered capable cyber actors. On the\nother hand, Israel is not without defence. the IDF has Unit 8200, an\nelite cyber unit reputed to have been involved in the Stuxnet operation,\nthe virus that damaged Iran\u2019s uranium enrichment facilities at Natanz a\ndecade ago. Last year, Israeli authorities accused pro-Iran groups of\nsending fake SMS messages posing as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to\nwarn of an attack on bomb shelters. Iran has also accused Israel of\nusing the popular messaging app WhatsApp to spy on its citizens during\nthe 12-day war last year.
