In a post on social\nmedia platform X, Gharibabadi stressed that any credible framework for\nmaritime traffic in the strategic waterway must be based on coordination\nwith Tehran and in line with Article 5 of the Islamabad memorandum of\nunderstanding (MoU) between Iran and the United States. \u201cSafe shipping\nlanes in the Strait of Hormuz cannot be guaranteed through ambiguous\narrangements, parallel routes, or decision-making that disregards Iran\nas a coastal state,\u201d he wrote. He warned that failure to meet these\nprovisions would result in the suspension of established parallel\nroutes. Previously, Iran\u2019s Foreign Ministry stated that the Strait of\nHormuz lies within the territorial waters of Iran and Oman. The ministry\nadded that shipping management in the strait would be governed under\nArticle 5 of the MoU. The statement was issued in response to a joint\ncommuniqu\u00e9 by the United States and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC),\nwhich called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and stressed the\nimportance of free, unconditional, and unrestricted freedom of\nnavigation in the strategic waterway. The joint US-GCC statement also\nrejected the imposition of tariffs, fees, or any attempts to assert\ncontrol over the Strait of Hormuz.
