\u201cWe warn that the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will\nsoon respond and retaliate against this armed hijacking and the US\nmilitary,\u201d said the spokesperson for the Khatam Al-Anbiya military\ncommand centre, as reported by detikNews on Monday (20\/4\/2026).<\/p>\n
Khatam accused the United States of violating the ceasefire that has\nbeen in place since 8 April.<\/p>\n
Trump had previously stated that US forces fired upon and seized an\nIranian-flagged cargo ship. The seizure occurred after the ship\nattempted to pass through the US Navy blockade in the Gulf of Oman.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday, an Iranian-flagged cargo ship named Touska, nearly 900 feet\nlong and weighing almost as much as an aircraft carrier, tried to pass\nour naval blockade, and it did not go well for them,\u201d Trump wrote in a\npost on Truth Social.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe US Navy\u2019s Guided Missile Destroyer USS Spruance intercepted\nTouska in the Gulf of Oman and gave them a warning to stop. The Iranian\ncrew refused to listen, so our naval vessel stopped them right in their\npath by blowing a hole in the engine room. Currently, US Marines have\nsecured the ship.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s announcement came as he accused Iran of violating the current\nceasefire agreement with its actions in the vital waterway route. Tehran\nhas once again blocked the route for most ships through the strait,\nciting the US\u2019s \u201cbreach of trust\u201d.<\/p>\n
The incident occurred amid high tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a\nvital route for the world\u2019s oil and liquefied natural gas, which has\nbeen practically closed since the start of the US-Israel war with Iran\nseven weeks ago.<\/p>\n
Iran had briefly reopened the strait on Friday in recognition of the\nIsrael-Hezbollah ceasefire in Lebanon, but closed it again the next day\nin response to the ongoing US blockade of ships sailing to and from\nIranian ports.<\/p>\n
Trump stated that Touska is under sanctions from the US Department of\nthe Treasury due to its history of previous illegal activities. Touska\nis listed on the website of the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the\nDepartment of the Treasury as an Iranian-flagged container under US\nsanctions.<\/p>\n
According to the latest available data from the Marine Traffic\nwebsite, about six hours before Trump\u2019s announcement, Touska was\napproximately 45 kilometres (28 miles) off the southern coast of Iran,\nnear the city of Chabahar.<\/p>\n
