The intensity of GPS jamming and\nsignal spoofing attacks by Iran has reportedly increased dramatically,\ncreating fatal risks for U.S. and Israeli military aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Hidary, CEO of SandboxAQ, warned in an interview with CNBC that\nIran now has access to China\u2019s Beidou satellite navigation system. This\ntechnological support enables Iran to achieve greater accuracy in\nmissile strikes and targeting operations throughout the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>Hidary explained that spoofing is far more dangerous than simple\nsignal jamming. False signals transmitted from ground stations can\ndeceive aircraft navigation systems without the flight crew\u2019s\nawareness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re flying an aircraft at 500 to 600 kilometres per hour, you\ncould find yourself in enemy territory very quickly without realising\nit,\u201d Hidary stated.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, many pilots are forced to use manual techniques,\nrepeatedly turning GPS signals on and off to prevent aircraft inertial\nsystems from being deceived. However, this method is considered\nunsustainable and carries significant long-term risks.<\/p>\n<p>The scale of this problem extends beyond conflict zones. In the past\nyear alone, 41,000 GPS malfunction incidents have been recorded in the\nGulf region, Europe, and surrounding areas. Even the aircraft of\nEuropean Union President Ursula von der Leyen was reportedly targeted by\nstate actors approximately six months ago, resulting in significant\nnavigation disruptions during flight.<\/p>\n<p>Although Iran\u2019s use of Beidou technology provides temporary tactical\nadvantages, Western allies are believed to be developing ways to\nneutralise these signals. Hidary emphasised that any satellite-based\nnavigation system inherently retains security vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n<p>As a solution, SandboxAQ is developing AQNav, a magnetic navigation\ntechnology that leverages Earth\u2019s unique magnetic signature. Key\nadvantages include its resilience against spoofing and jamming\nattacks.<\/p>\n<p>The technology has been extensively tested by the U.S. Air Force for\nover three years. Additionally, Airbus has validated the system through\nmore than 100 flights covering a total distance of 44,000\nkilometres.<\/p>\n<p>Hidary concluded that the aviation industry must urgently transition\naway from GPS dependency as a single point of failure. The adoption of\nmagnetic navigation is considered a crucial step towards securing the\nfuture of military defence and commercial aviation safety worldwide.<\/p>",
