The US launched\nanother series of strikes against Iranian targets on Monday local time,\nfor the second consecutive day. Washington claims the military action is\na response to attacks believed to have been carried out by Tehran on\nships transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The latest barrage of US strikes\nprompted Iran to target neighbouring countries in the Gulf region, as\nwell as Jordan, in retaliation. Iran warned it will no longer comply\nwith the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the US in\nmid-June if Washington fails to meet its commitment to end the war.\n\u201cWhenever the other party fails to fulfil its obligations, we too will\nnot fulfil our obligations\u2026 We will continue to act in this manner,\u201d\nBaghaei stressed at a recent press conference in Tehran, following the\nlatest round of hostilities between the two nations. Baghaei emphasised\nthat Iran is working to agree on a joint mechanism with Oman regarding\nthe Strait of Hormuz. However, US pressure on Oman has hampered this\neffort. The renewed fighting between Iran and the US, following a\nfragile ceasefire in place since April, centres on conflicting claims\nover the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway vital for global energy\nsupplies. Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) recently\nannounced that the Strait of Hormuz is now \u201cclosed\u201d. The US, however,\ninsists the vital waterway remains open to maritime traffic and is not\ncontrolled by Iran. Mediators have been attempting to salvage a\ndiplomatic solution to end the war, after US President Donald Trump\ndeclared last week that the ceasefire was over. Pakistan, the main\nmediator in the Iran-US negotiations, expressed \u201cdeep concern over the\nescalation of regional tensions\u201d in a statement from its Foreign\nMinistry.
