Following Israeli and American military strikes on Iran on 28 February 2026, international law expert Professor Hikmahanto Juwana from the University of Indonesia has warned that the Middle East escalation could significantly impact Indonesia's economy, particularly through disrupted oil supplies and global economic slowdown.

JAKARTA – The Middle East has been in turmoil since Saturday, 28
February 2026, when Israel launched unprovoked airstrikes against Tehran
and several locations across Iranian territory. Shortly thereafter,
Washington confirmed American involvement in supporting the military
action against the Islamic Republic.

Professor Hikmahanto Juwana, an international law expert from the
University of Indonesia (UI), believes that this regional upheaval could
impact many nations, including Indonesia. He warns that the consequences
could be considerably more severe should other nations become
involved.

For now, Hikmahanto noted, the global economy will undoubtedly be
affected. Particularly concerning is Iran’s declaration of closure of
the Strait of Hormuz, which will disrupt 20 per cent of the world’s oil
supply.

“The impact includes a slowdown in the global economy due to rising
oil prices, whilst business operators are plagued by uncertainty and
disruption to supply chains. This will have consequences for Indonesia’s
national economy,” Hikmahanto told Republika on Sunday, 1 March
2026.

He has urged the Indonesian government to take several steps to help
reduce the escalation of the conflict.

First, according to Hikmahanto, the Indonesian government needs to
condemn Israel’s attack which initiated this war. The action by the
Zionist entity clearly violates Article 2, Paragraph 4 of the UN
Charter, which requires states to refrain from the threat or use of
force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any
state.

“Second, Indonesia should request that the United States exercise
restraint in its involvement in Israeli attacks,” he said.

Shortly after news emerged of the Israeli-American strikes on Iran,
the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on Saturday, 28
February 2026. According to Hikmahanto, the Indonesian government can
prepare a draft General Assembly resolution to condemn Israel’s
actions.

Beyond the UN, he continued, the Indonesian government could also
play a role in the Board of Peace or BoP (Board of Peace). Although this
body was initiated by US President Donald Trump, Indonesia continues to
have a voice within it.

“Indonesia should ask BoP Chairman Donald Trump to take immediate
action and convene an emergency BoP meeting to discuss halting the
attacks,” Hikmahanto said.
",
