Iran and UAE back joint BRICS statement urging restraint in war<\/p>\n
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi\non the sidelines of the first day of the New Delhi summit, in the\ncountries\u2019 highest-level meeting since the start of the conflict.<\/p>\n
NEW DELHI: Iran and the United Arab Emirates signed up to a joint\nstatement from the BRICS group of nations that called for restraint in\nthe Middle East war on Saturday (Sep 12), in what was seen as a sign of\ndiplomatic progress between the countries divided by the war.<\/p>\n
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also met the Crown Prince of Abu\nDhabi on the sidelines of the first day of the New Delhi summit, in the\ncountries\u2019 highest-level meeting since the start of the conflict.<\/p>\n
The two leaders discussed regional and international issues,\nde-escalation, stability, and efforts to advance regional peace and\ndevelopment, the Abu Dhabi media office said on X, without referring to\nany resolution to the discussions.<\/p>\n
The BRICS summit is a test of the diplomatic clout of a bloc set up\nin 2009 to challenge a world order dominated by the United States and\nits Western allies. It originally comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China\nand South Africa and expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia and Indonesia\nas well as Iran and the UAE.<\/p>\n
Summit organisers and diplomats have been focused on bridging the\nIran-UAE divide, even as the United States and Iran resume tit-for-tat\nstrikes in the six-month-old war.<\/p>\n
Iran has launched repeated attacks on the UAE during the conflict,\nmost recently in late August when it targeted the Al Minhad Air Base\nthat housed US forces and helicopters.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe express deep concern over the continued escalation of tensions in\nMiddle East\/West Asia \u2026 call for exercising maximum restraint, as well\nas avoiding actions that could further aggravate the situation,\u201d the\njoint BRICS declaration read.<\/p>\n
It called for the protection of civilians, urged respect for the\nsovereignty and territorial integrity of states, and stressed the need\nto protect global trade, supply chains, energy flows and maritime\nsecurity.<\/p>\n
SUMMIT HAS KEPT \u201cDIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS GOING\u201d<\/p>\n
Foreign policy experts had said the key test for the bloc would be\nfinding language on the Middle East crisis that both Abu Dhabi and\nTehran could accept, clearing the way for the joint declaration.<\/p>\n
Such a joint statement was unlikely to influence the current\ngeopolitical landscape, but would demonstrate unity by a grouping of\nemerging nations, they said.<\/p>\n
The Iranian embassy in India posted a photo of the meeting between\nits president and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin\nZayed Al Nahyan, the eldest son of the president of the country and the\nnext in line to succeed him.<\/p>\n
But it did not say anything about what they discussed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe key to ending the war lies with the US and Israel,\u201d Sunjay\nSudhir, a former Indian ambassador to the UAE, told Reuters.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat India has done is keep the difficult conversations going, by\nshowing that countries of the region can sit at the same table, engage\ndiplomatically, and build on where their interests converge.\u201d<\/p>\n
BRICS BLOC HAS COME OF AGE, SAYS MODI<\/p>\n
Host India\u2019s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the bloc had come\nof age and it was time to translate its unity and consensus into\nconcrete results on the global stage, as he opened the meeting.<\/p>\n
The BRICS bloc is seeking to raise its profile by influencing\ninternational rules and demanding the reform of institutions such as the\nWorld Bank, International Monetary Fund and World Trade Organization,\nwhich some members view as being dominated by Western powers.<\/p>\n
Leaders attending the summit include Russia\u2019s Vladimir Putin, China\u2019s\nXi Jinping and South Africa\u2019s Cyril Ramaphosa.<\/p>\n
Chinese President Xi said BRICS countries should firmly stand on the\nright side of history by steering the international order toward greater\nequity and justice.<\/p>\n
Xi also said China was ready to play its \u201cdue role\u201d in achieving\npeace and stability in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
\u201cRelevant parties must remain committed to a political settlement and\nwork towards achieving a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire,\u201d he\nsaid, according to state broadcaster CCTV.<\/p>\n
