Iran and Oman have agreed to establish a temporary transit route\nseven miles wide through the Strait of Hormuz, Iran\u2019s Deputy Foreign\nMinister Kazem Gharibabadi said on Tuesday (24\/8\/2026). However, in an\ninterview with Iranian television, Gharibabadi stressed that the\nagreement does not mean the strategic waterway of the Strait of Hormuz\nhas been reopened.<\/p>\n
He explained that the agreed route will pass through Iran\u2019s\nterritorial waters when ships enter. Meanwhile, when ships exit, part of\nthe route also passes through Iranian waters.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe width of the transit route agreed with Oman in the Strait of\nHormuz is seven miles (around 11.3 km),\u201d Gharibabadi said, describing\nthe route as a temporary arrangement.<\/p>\n
Iran and Oman will hold further negotiations over 30 to 60 days to\ndetermine a permanent route and shipping management arrangements through\nthe strait. Gharibabadi reiterated that the agreement with Oman must not\nbe interpreted as a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Strait of Hormuz is closed and we have full control over it,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He also denied claims that ships have already passed through the\nroute. According to Gharibabadi, activation of the joint route agreed\nwith Oman will also mean the closure of the southern route.<\/p>\n
The two countries agreed to begin technical negotiations on an\nalternative route to the historic one. Gharibabadi said Iran regards the\nStrait of Hormuz as a matter of national security and has the right to\ntake measures it deems necessary to protect its interests.<\/p>\n
He also said Iran does not trust Washington. According to him, the\nreturn of diplomacy must be preceded by the United States\u2019 compliance in\nfulfilling its obligations under the Islamabad Memorandum of\nUnderstanding (MoU).<\/p>\n
\u201cBefore any action to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the US must fully\nimplement all of its commitments that have been violated. The reopening\nof the Strait of Hormuz will only be carried out in exchange for an end\nto the war on all fronts, the lifting of blockades, and the resolution\nof Yemen\u2019s status,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Gharibabadi said Pakistan\u2019s Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim\nMunir conveyed a similar message during his recent visit to Iran.
