IPTN to launch Australian venture<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto, as patron of the Board for
\nStrategic Industry Management (BPIS), has approved the setting up
\nof a joint venture by Indonesia's state-owned aircraft maker, PT
\nIPTN, and Australia.<\/p>\n
\"The joint venture will be called either IPTN Technology
\nAustralia (ITA) or Indonesia Technology in Australia and it will
\nbe established after the Idul Fitri holiday next February,\" State
\nMinister of Research and Technology B.J. Habibie said over the
\nweekend.<\/p>\n
After meeting with Australian Deputy Prime Minister\/Minister
\nof Trade Tim Fischer, Habibie said that the joint venture company
\nwill be located in Australia.<\/p>\n
He did not mention the capital structure of the joint venture
\nnor the total investment for the industry.<\/p>\n
But he noted that the establishment of the joint venture firm
\nwas aimed at improving Indonesia's aircraft engineering
\ncapability by using human resources in Australia.<\/p>\n
Habibie said that this could not be construed as IPTN selling
\ntechnology to Australia because the aircraft producer's
\nIndonesian staff would control the main production unit in
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
Initially, the joint venture will operate as an engineering
\ncompany, utilizing Australian companies to make airplane
\ncomponents, such as doors, wings and tails.<\/p>\n
Asked about how the preparation of the joint venture
\nestablishment is going so far, Habibie said that IPTN has
\ndemonstrated to Australia its capability to produce the CN-235,
\nN-250, and N-2130.<\/p>\n
Habibie expressed optimism that the planned joint venture will
\nbenefit each country. \"Australia will not only benefit from
\nselling the products on its domestic market, but also from
\nselling to Indonesia and other foreign countries,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Fischer, who was accompanied by Australian Minister
\nof Industry, Science, Technology and Tourism John Moore, said
\nthat his government welcomes the establishment of the planned
\njoint venture.<\/p>\n
\"Basically, Australia is widely open for Indonesian companies
\nto invest in transportation, construction and hitech industries,\"
