IPB to develop agroforestry<\/p>\n
BOGOR: The Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB) is planning to
\ndevelop agroforestry as a new scientific discipline, despite the
\ngovernment's lack of support.<\/p>\n
IPB rector Aman Wirakartakusuma said after attending the
\nSoutheast Asian Network for Agroforestry Education (SEANAFE) here
\non Tuesday that the institute would initiate the new study next
\nyear in compliance with the government's program to promote
\nautonomy for universities.<\/p>\n
"Agroforestry is only a few years old, but it has developed so
\nrapidly. We are able to focus more on this new study, thanks to
\nmajor achievements in schools of agriculture and forestry," Aman
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He added that five other state universities -- Gadjah Mada in
\nYogyakarta, Lambung Mangkurat in Banjarmasin, Brawijaya in
\nMalang, Mulawarman in Samarinda and the University of Lampung --
\nhad shown a strong commitment to establishing agroforestry as a
\nnew discipline.<\/p>\n
Representatives of the five universities were among 33
\nparticipants of the SEANAFE meeting, the second of its kind,
\nhosted by IPB. Scholars from Thailand, Vietnam and the
\nPhilippines and Swedish ambassador to Indonesia Harald Sandberg
\nwere among the participants.<\/p>\n
Aman said IPB would cooperate with SEANAFE in drafting the
\ncurriculum for agroforestry study.<\/p>\n
Since its inception in 1999, SEANAFE has received financial
\naid from the Swedish government. The regional institution is
\naffiliated to the Center for International Agroforestry Research.
