IPB may close student dormitories<\/p>\n
BOGOR (JP): The Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB) is
\nconsidering closing some of its nine student dormitories and
\nbuilding commercial buildings on the land, IPB spokesman Agus
\nLelana said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
IPB will build a new dormitory on the Dermaga campus to
\naccommodate at least 3,000 students. The present dormitory is
\nable to accommodate only 500 students, said Agus.<\/p>\n
"The construction of the new building will start this year,"
\nAgus said.<\/p>\n
Three of IPB's dormitories are located on the Dermaga campus.
\nFour dormitories are located on Jl. Juanda, in front of the Bogor
\nBotanical Gardens. The remaining two are situated on Jl.
\nSiliwangi.<\/p>\n
The institute has 22,000 students.<\/p>\n
In December, the government introduced autonomy on state
\ncampuses. Under the new regulation, institutions of higher
\nlearning have been awarded ownership of their buildings and land.<\/p>\n
State universities are also allowed to seek funding for
\neducational or research projects. However, the subsidy from the
\ngovernment has been reduced as universities are now expected to
\nachieve financial self-sufficiency.<\/p>\n
IPB students have reacted cautiously to the dormitory plan.
\nStudent leader Ahmad Sukhan said students could understand that
\nIPB would need more funds, but the plan should not be at the
\nexpense of students.<\/p>\n
"We will maintain this facility, but we will wait for further
\nexplanations from the institute," said Ahmad. (21)<\/p>",
