        "content": "<p>IPB may close student dormitories<\/p>\n<p>BOGOR (JP): The Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB) is<br>\nconsidering closing some of its nine student dormitories and<br>\nbuilding commercial buildings on the land, IPB spokesman Agus<br>\nLelana said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>IPB will build a new dormitory on the Dermaga campus to<br>\naccommodate at least 3,000 students. The present dormitory is<br>\nable to accommodate only 500 students, said Agus.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The construction of the new building will start this year,&quot;<br>\nAgus said.<\/p>\n<p>Three of IPB&apos;s dormitories are located on the Dermaga campus.<br>\nFour dormitories are located on Jl. Juanda, in front of the Bogor<br>\nBotanical Gardens. The remaining two are situated on Jl.<br>\nSiliwangi.<\/p>\n<p>The institute has 22,000 students.<\/p>\n<p>In December, the government introduced autonomy on state<br>\ncampuses. Under the new regulation, institutions of higher<br>\nlearning have been awarded ownership of their buildings and land.<\/p>\n<p>State universities are also allowed to seek funding for<br>\neducational or research projects. However, the subsidy from the<br>\ngovernment has been reduced as universities are now expected to<br>\nachieve financial self-sufficiency.<\/p>\n<p>IPB students have reacted cautiously to the dormitory plan.<br>\nStudent leader Ahmad Sukhan said students could understand that<br>\nIPB would need more funds, but the plan should not be at the<br>\nexpense of students.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We will maintain this facility, but we will wait for further<br>\nexplanations from the institute,&quot; said Ahmad.
