Investors sought for waste plant projects<\/p>\n

The city administration is inviting private companies to build
\nwaste treatment plants here in order to settle waste disposal
\nproblem once and for all.<\/p>\n
\"I has been tasked by Governor Sutiyoso to seek investors
\ninterested in developing waste treatment facilities in the
\ncapital,\" said newly installed head of the City Sanitation
\nAgency Rama Boedi on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Rama said his office was looking into the possibility of
\ndeveloping one treatment plant in each of East Jakarta, North
\nJakarta, West Jakarta and South Jakarta municipalities.<\/p>\n
\"With the planned construction of waste treatment facilities,
\nwe hope we will no longer depend on other regions to manage
\naround 6,000 tons of garbage the city produces daily,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said companies interested in the projects must have high
\nqualifications -- both financial and technology capabilities.<\/p>\n
According to Rama, potential investors would also be asked to
\nexplain their financial sources -- soft or commercial loan. \"Of
\ncourse, all facilities to be constructed in the city will use
\nhigh technology, which will be environmentally friendly,\" he
\nadded.<\/p>\n
He stressed, however, that the city administration would still
\nmaintain existing dumps outside Jakarta, including the 104-
\nhectare dump in Bantar Gebang, Bekasi municipality, which would
\nsupport planned waste treatment facilities.<\/p>\n
Rama did not mention locations of planned waste plants, but
\nseveral locations had been cited as potential alternative dump
\nsites, including Marunda in North Jakarta, Tegal Alur and Duri
\nKosambi in West Jakarta and Cakung in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Almost every year, the city experiences waste crisis.<\/p>\n
Early last year, the city was forced to dispose garbage to
\nCilincing subdistrict, North Jakarta, following the closure of
\nBantar Gebang dump.<\/p>",
