The government move through the Investment Coordinating Agency
\n(BKPM) to declare 2003 "Indonesian Investment Year" can be
\napproached with pessimism and optimism.<\/p>\n
The pessimistic approach considers this year a difficult
\nperiod to attract investment because, first, price hikes have
\nincreased production costs; second, security conditions are
\nuncertain on the eve of the 2004 general elections; and third,
\nthere is tough competition from China, Vietnam, Thailand and
\nAsia.<\/p>\n
These conclusions were released by various foreign
\ninstitutions such as the Japan International Cooperation Agency
\n(JICA) and the International Country Risk Guide (ICRG).<\/p>\n
In fact, investments are very important for Indonesia's
\neconomic growth, because constant growth will provide job
\nopportunities. Under current circumstances, the idea of BKPM
\nChief Theo Toemion to launch Indonesian Investment Year 2003, as
\nalready announced by President Megawati, deserves support.<\/p>\n
By the optimistic approach, it is deemed necessary to boost
\nthe investment spirit despite unfavorable domestic conditions. It
\nis the duty of the government as well as legislators to make
\nIndonesia the choice of foreign investors. BKPM should also try
\nto woo local investors so that they, too, will contribute to
\neconomic growth.<\/p>\n
