        "content": "<p>Investment climate 'still the best in ASEAN'<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (Antara): Indonesia's investment climate is still the<br>\nbest in ASEAN given its abundant natural resources, huge labor<br>\nforce and adequate infrastructure, the director of the Japan<br>\nExternal Trade Organization (JETRO), Yoshi Suga, said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\"After visiting several industrial estates in Indonesia, I<br>\nmust encourage Japanese businessmen to invest more in the<br>\ncountry,\" he said when visiting the MM2100 industrial zone in<br>\nCibitung, Bekasi.<\/p>\n<p>The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) groups<br>\nBrunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines,<br>\nSingapore, Thailand and Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p>The 30-year-old grouping is frequently described as the<br>\nworld's fastest-growing economy with an average annual growth of<br>\nbetween 7 percent and 8 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Suga's view was shared by diplomats from the United Kingdom,<br>\nCanada and Austria who said Indonesia's economic policies were<br>\nconsistent because they continued to be marked by new<br>\nderegulation packages.<\/p>\n<p>The packages were obviously attractive to many foreign<br>\ninvestors, they said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the chief of the promotions department of the<br>\nInvestment Coordinating Board, Sugihono Kadarisman, said that<br>\nderegulation and bureaucratic reform would continue to be the<br>\nmain features of domestic economic policies.<\/p>\n<p>\"They are expected to boost our production of goods and our<br>\nservices,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the ASEAN Free Trade Area, the Asia-Pacific Economic<br>\nCooperation forum and the World Trade Organization would involve<br>\nIndonesia in global economics.<\/p>\n<p>On the construction of more industrial estates, Kadarisman<br>\nsaid that land clearing sometimes posed a big problem.<\/p>\n<p>Acknowledging the difficulty of clearing land for estates,<br>\nWest Java Deputy Governor HM Sampoerna said recently: \"Local<br>\nadministrations, in line with existing regulations, are not<br>\nallowed to take part in the clearing of land for the activities<br>\nof private enterprises.\"<\/p>\n<p>\"We can only do so for government projects,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Private enterprises must clear their land by themselves, he<br>\nsaid, adding that existing regulations sometimes prompted land<br>\nspeculation.<\/p>\n<p>But Sampoerna said that, with better coordination, the<br>\nNational Land Agency and related agencies could eliminate this<br>\nproblem.<\/p>",
