A human rights activist from Papua, Yan Christian Warinussy, has\ncondemned the attack on Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of the\nCommission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence. He has urged\nPresident Prabowo Subianto to initiate the formation of an investigation\nteam to probe the case.<\/p>\n
He stated that the investigation team must work independently in\nidentifying the perpetrators and motive behind the attack on Andrie.\n\u201cThis investigation team should be coordinated by the National Human\nRights Commission, Kontras, and the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation,\u201d he\nsaid in a statement on Saturday, 14 March 2026.<\/p>\n
The state, he said, must provide access for the independent team to\nconduct its investigation. Yan noted that this is stipulated in several\nregulations including Law No.\u00a039 of 1999 on Human Rights and Law No.\u00a026\nof 2000 on Human Rights Courts.<\/p>\n
\u201cI urge National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit and his staff to\nimmediately take all responsible legal action,\u201d said the human rights\nactivist who was previously a victim of shooting by unknown\nassailants.<\/p>\n
According to Yan, the acid attack on the activist has tarnished\nIndonesia\u2019s image internationally. This case of violence, he said, would\nfurther damage the country\u2019s reputation regarding legal protection for\nhuman rights defenders.<\/p>\n
\u201cYet the Republic of Indonesia has adopted several universal human\nrights instruments,\u201d said the Executive Director of the Legal Research,\nReview and Development Institution in Manokwari.<\/p>\n
He also urged the state to provide the best service for Andrie\nYunus\u2019s care and health recovery. Andrie remains hospitalised at the\nNational General Hospital Dr Cipto Mangunkusumo in Jakarta following the\nacid attack.<\/p>\n
According to medical records, Andrie suffered burns covering 24 per\ncent of his body. Andrie Yunus also underwent eye surgery following\nexposure to the caustic liquid.<\/p>\n
Andrie Yunus was doused with acid whilst on Salemba I-Talang Street,\nCentral Jakarta on Thursday evening, 12 March 2026. He was attacked by\ntwo unknown individuals travelling on a motorcycle.<\/p>\n
The perpetrators of the acid attack approached from the opposite\ndirection to Andrie. Kontras Coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya stated that\nthe perpetrators sprayed acid onto the front of Andrie\u2019s body.<\/p>\n
After being doused with acid, Andrie collapsed onto the road whilst\ncrying out in pain. Dimas recounted that just before the incident,\nAndrie had finished recording a podcast titled \u201cRemilitarisation and\nJudicial Review in Indonesia\u201d at the office of the Legal Aid Foundation\n(YLBHI) in Central Jakarta, around 11:00 pm on Thursday evening.<\/p>\n
The corrosive chemical struck Andrie\u2019s right side including his eyes,\nface, chest and hands.
