Investigation of attorney general to conclude soon<\/p>\n

The State Officials' Wealth Audit Commission (KPKPN) said on
\nThursday it would complete its investigation into the allegation
\nof corruption implicating Attorney General M.A. Rachman, before
\nIdul Fitri, Dec. 6.<\/p>\n
"We hope the final results of the investigation will wind up
\nbefore Dec. 5 or Dec. 6," KPKPN chairman Jusuf Syakir, whose
\ncommission has been under public pressure to resolve the case
\nimmediately, told a hearing of the House of Representatives'
\nCommission II on home and legal affairs.<\/p>\n
Idul Fitri Muslim holiday this year will fall on Dec. 6, a
\nnational holiday.<\/p>\n
A majority of Muslims, including state officials, usually go
\nback to their home villages to celebrate Idul Fitri with their
\nrelatives and there are very few public services during the
\nholidays.<\/p>\n
Jusuf took issue with the public's impression that the KPKPN
\nhad been sluggish in carrying out the investigation.<\/p>\n
In the high profile Rachman case, the commission has had three
\nmembers working on it for the past 13 months.<\/p>\n
"We are not experiencing any problems in investigating the
\ncase. However, it takes times to complete the investigation as
\nthe team has to summon witnesses and must double check all
\ninformation before reaching a conclusion," said Jusuf.<\/p>\n
Rachman has been on the hot seat, as he is suspected of
\nconcealing, among other things, a luxury house in Depok, south of
\nJakarta, reportedly worth Rp 5 billion from his wealth report to
\nthe commission.<\/p>\n
The case has drawn a great amount of public attention and
\npublic outrage has run deep, as Rachman has frequently given
\nconflicting statements, but moreso because he is one of the
\nhighest legal officials in the country and tasked with rooting
\nout the very type of corruption he is accused of.<\/p>\n
The team grilled 15 attorney general's office staff people,
\nincluding Rachman, said Jusuf. He refused to reveal when Rachman
\nwould be questioned again, saying that "it was too technical."<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, legislators stepped up pressure on KPKPN to speed
\nup the investigation, saying a quick investigation into the case
\nwas badly needed to avoid confusion among the public.<\/p>\n
"The investigation's results are much awaited because they
\nwill be used by relevant authorities, including President
\nMegawati Soekarnoputri, as a guide to decide the Attorney
\nGeneral's fate," Dwi Ria Latifa of the Indonesian Democratic
\nParty of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) faction said.<\/p>\n
Julius Usman, also from PDI Perjuangan faction, concurred and
\nadded that the KPKPN could risk of losing the people's confidence
\nif the investigation could not be completed immediately.<\/p>\n
"The commission must shed some light into the truth behind the
\ncase so that the public knows where Rachman's assets came from,"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the legislators refused comment about speculation
\nof "an ongoing competition" among politicians to replace Rachman.<\/p>",
