Investigation into genereal's murder ends<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police announced yesterday that the
\ninvestigation of the killing of Brig. Gen. TMF Tampubolon on
\nMonday evening has been completed.<\/p>\n
\"We've no more words to comment on the case because all three
\nmain elements in our investigation, namely suspects, witnesses
\nand the evidence available, match,\" said City Police spokesman
\nLt. Col. A. Latief Rabar.<\/p>\n
He refused to explain, saying that all details of the killing
\nwere released by City Police chief Maj. Gen. Mochammad Hindarto
\nthe day before.<\/p>\n
\"If my superior has released the story, I've nothing more to
\ntell you,\" he told reporters.<\/p>\n
He refused to answer any questions from the reporters about a
\nseries of theories about Tampubolon's killing, which all differ
\nfrom Hindarto's version.<\/p>\n
Earlier on Wednesday, Hindarto revealed that Tampubolon was
\nstabbed 11 times by two of the four suspects now in custody,
\nafter a heated argument on Jl. Griya Wartawan, Kebon Nanas, in
\nCipinang Muara, East Jakarta. The incident occurred at around 10
\np.m. Monday.<\/p>\n
According to the police, the argument took place after the
\nfour men banged on the trunk of the Army general's passing sedan.<\/p>\n
However, newspapers reported a number of different versions.
\nOne paper quoted a witness as saying that the general, who was
\ndriving alone in his official sedan, was forced to stop at the
\nedge of the road by an unidentified sedan and a motorcycle.<\/p>\n
Earlier, a relative of the victim told The Jakarta Post that
\nTampubolon left his house in a hurry after receiving a call on
\nhis handphone, the number of which is known by very few people.<\/p>\n
Tampubolon, 54, was an expert staff on economic affairs to the
\nABRI Chief and a former intelligence deputy assistant to ABRI's
\nchief of general affairs.<\/p>\n
He was the first general to be murdered during President
\nSoeharto's 28-year reign.<\/p>\n
When asked to comment, criminologist Mulyana W. Kusumah, who
\nis also an executive director of the YLBHI legal aid foundation,
\nyesterday stated that the killing of the general was a very
\nserious case.<\/p>\n
Mulyana therefore urged the police to find out and announce
\nthe substantial background of the murder.<\/p>\n
\"Do not let the heart of the public remain troubled because --
\npsychologically -- the people as well as relatives of the victim
\nneed to know the complete story of the killing,\" he was quoted by
\nTerbit afternoon daily as saying.<\/p>\n
During the press conference on Wednesday, Hindarto insisted
\nthat there were no other stories behind the killing.<\/p>\n
\"It's just the result of an insignificant problem,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Tampubolon played a role in the efforts to solve the internal
\nproblems at The Toba Batak Protestant Church (HKBP).<\/p>\n
The Army brigadier general was buried at the Cikutra hero
\ncemetery in Bandung, West Java, Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The four suspects, residents near the scene, are in City
\nPolice Headquarters detention.<\/p>\n
The four are Rusdi Abdul Rahman, 24, Hendrik Setyawan, 25,
\nRudiyanto, 24, and Lukman, 30.<\/p>\n
Police said that Rusdi, a security guard, is the one who
\nstabbed Tampubolon with his bayonet and Hendrik, a construction
\nworker, wounded the general with his machete. (bsr)<\/p>",
