Investigation continues into mobile phone scam<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The head of the City Police's General Crimes
\nDirectorate, Lt. Col. Gories Mere, said that the investigation of
\nfour men allegedly using copied hand phones is still going on.<\/p>\n
\"There are no other suspects so far,\" Gories said.<\/p>\n
The four entertainers, who have been identified as Deddy
\nDhukun, Yacob, Barlianto, and Dicky, were questioned on Thursday
\nand later released on bail by the city police for using
\ncounterfeit hand phones.<\/p>\n
Gories said police were also investigating the possibility
\nthat the four users of the copied hand phones had the permission
\nof the legal owners.<\/p>\n
\"It could be that they got the hand phones as gifts,\" Gories
\nsaid, adding that the matter would be investigated further.<\/p>\n
Gories, however, questioned their admission that they had no
\nidea that using copied phones was a crime.<\/p>\n
\"I think all modern people in Jakarta know they have to pay
\nwhenever they use telephones. As modern people, especially as
\nentertainers, they should have known,\" Gories said.<\/p>\n
During the past two weeks police arrested six other people for
\nallegedly producing counterfeit hand phones and stealing
\ntelephone pulses. Police also confiscated 12 hand phones and an
\nelectronic serial number reader (ESNR) which was used to detect
\nand copy the serial numbers of on-air hand phones.<\/p>\n
Investigation<\/p>\n
A preliminary investigation led to the duplicated hand phone
\nbuyers, including the four entertainers.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, City Police chief Maj. Gen. Dibyo Widodo said
\nyesterday that detention of the four entertainers was being
\nsuspended.<\/p>\n
The offense allegedly committed by the four entertainers is
\npunishable by imprisonment of less than five years and hence,
\naccording to the law, they do not have to be detained.<\/p>\n
\"They are suspects and have been interrogated,\" Dibyo said.<\/p>\n
Dibyo said some of the suspects even pretended not to know
\nthat they had committed a criminal act.<\/p>\n
\"They said their hand phones were off and they never used
\nthem,\" Dibyo said.<\/p>\n
Gories said police would also investigate the possibility of
\ncopied hand phones being used in the Jakarta Stock Exchange.<\/p>\n
\"A report has been received by the police that many people in
\nthe Stock Exchange are using copied hand phones,\" Gories said.
