        "content": "<p>Introspection<\/p>\n<p>From Koran Tempo<\/p>\n<p>The failed meeting at Bogor Palace (July 9, 2001) is<br>\nindicative of the deep political rift between President<br>\nAbdurrahman Wahid and various parties, such as the House of<br>\nRepresentatives (DPR) and police.<\/p>\n<p>This is caused by President Abdurrahman's bombastic<br>\nstatements, such as his threat to declare a state of emergency<br>\nand dissolve the House of Representatives should a compromise not<br>\nbe reached by July 20.<\/p>\n<p>Through his spokesperson Yahya C. Staquf, he ordered<br>\nCoordinating Minister for Political, Social and Security Affairs<br>\nAgum Gumelar and National Police deputy chief Chaeruddin Ismail<br>\nto arrest National Police chief Suroyo Bimantoro and Jakarta<br>\nPolice chief Sofjan Yacob.<\/p>\n<p>On July 13, 2001, after Friday prayers at a pesantren (Islamic<br>\nboarding school) in Cirebon, he again threatened to issue a<br>\ndecree on the declaration of a state of emergency on Friday, July<br>\n20 at 6 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>This statement has certainly raised the political temperature<br>\nand was deliberately made to foil the upcoming special session of<br>\nthe People's Consultative Assembly (MPR).<\/p>\n<p>President Abdurrahman is also trying to influence public<br>\nopinion and garner support for the issuance of such a decree,<br>\nwhich seems to be a last ditch attempt to save his presidency, as<br>\nhis four conditions on the convening of the special session<br>\n(scheduled for Aug. 1) have been ignored by the political elite.<\/p>\n<p>As a member of the public, I am very apprehensive about the<br>\nPresident's maneuvers because in addition to escalating the<br>\npolitical tension, they will also disrupt the workings of the<br>\nnation.<\/p>\n<p>Former coordinating minister for political, social and<br>\nsecurity affairs Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said a \"political<br>\ncollision\" or deadlock in the special session should be avoided,<br>\nas it would lead to more conflict.<\/p>\n<p>I think the people at large feel discomforted by the<br>\nPresident's actions and behavior.
