        "content": "<p>Int'l works showed at Istiqlal festival<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The Second International Istiqlal Festival on<br>\nIslamic culture opening in September will exhibit over 200<br>\ntraditional and contemporary Islamic works of art from various<br>\ncountries.<\/p>\n<p>Exhibition organizing committee chairman Achmad Noe'man said<br>\nThursday that Indonesia, as the host of the Festival, will<br>\ndisplay 150 works, Malaysia 30 and other Islamic countries 40.<\/p>\n<p>President Soeharto is scheduled to open the two-month festival<br>\nwhich will last from Sept. 23 to Nov. 23. The organizers promise<br>\nthat the festivities will be \"bigger and more lively\" than during<br>\nthe first festival in 1991.<\/p>\n<p>The festival will take place at the Istiqlal grand mosque in<br>\ncentral Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>Among the countries confirming participation are Egypt,<br>\nMorocco, Turk, Iran, Spain, Singapore, and Brunei Darussalam.<\/p>\n<p>Achmad said the festival will be a forum for artists and<br>\nlaymen alike to exchange knowledge and ideas on classical and<br>\ncontemporary Islamic art.<\/p>\n<p>Works on display will range from Islamic architecture,<br>\ncalligraphy, and traditional and contemporary fine arts.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors will also have an opportunity to observe letters<br>\nwritten by legendary Islamic scholars such as Hamzah Fansuri and<br>\nAli Haji.<\/p>\n<p>The architectural exhibition will display models of mosques<br>\nand their environments, as well as each structure's influence on<br>\ncultural products of different periods.<\/p>\n<p>The event is organized by the Istiqlal Festival Foundation, an<br>\norganization on Islamic teaching and promulgation, co-chaired by<br>\nMinister of Finance Mar'ie Muhammad and business tycoon Ponco<br>\nSutowo.<\/p>\n<p>According to Ponco, the organizers hope for at least 10<br>\nmillion people to visit the cultural celebration, which will also<br>\nfeature activities such as Koran recital competitions, seminars,<br>\nand a bazaar.
