'Int'l ring trades illegal arms'<\/p>\n
MEDAN, North Sumatra: An international syndicate has been
\ninvolved in the illegal arms trade supplying weaponry from
\nThailand to North Sumatra, says a criminologist.<\/p>\n
Prof. Chainur Arrasyid of the University of North Sumatra said
\nhere on Friday that illegal trade in M-16 and AK-47 rifles in the
\nprovince involved a well-organized international syndicate, which
\nwas why security authorities had difficulties curbing it.<\/p>\n
The local police recently arrested eight Thais, including a
\nwoman, who were smuggling arms of such models into the province.<\/p>\n
"The weapons have been used in robberies and other crimes in
\nthe province," he said.<\/p>\n
Indonesia has asked Thailand to enhance its border security in
\nareas it shares with Malaysia, from where GAM receives its
