Int'l arts festival to be held here soon<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The 8th Jakarta International Festival
\n(Jakfest'97) will be held from June 23 to June 29.<\/p>\n
Dance shows, music and handicraft exhibitions will be
\npresented by 17 countries including Indonesia at the cultural
\nexchange forum.<\/p>\n
It is jointly arranged by the city and Garuda Indonesia
\nAirlines.<\/p>\n
The 17 countries include Australia, the Netherlands, the
\nPeople's Republic of China, the Philippines and India, Japan,
\nSouth Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Singapore, Slovenia,
\nSri Lanka, Vietnam and Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The performances will be staged at Erasmus Huis, the Dutch
\ncultural center in South Jakarta; Ancol art market in North
\nJakarta; the Gedung Kesenian Jakarta and Jakarta Convention
\nCenter in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Ita Munaf, the festival organizing committee's chairperson,
\nsaid the performances were free of charge, and would include a
\ncultural procession on June 29 from the National Monument square
\nto a stage in front of Sari Pan Pacific Hotel.<\/p>\n
Vietnam, Indonesia and the Netherlands will present musical
\nperformances.<\/p>\n
Vietnam will send a 20-member delegation from the Thai Binh
\nArt Troupe, presenting Folk Songs of the North Delta.<\/p>\n
Indonesian troupes will present rampak kendang from Sumatra,
\nthe Betawi jaipong, and the Acehnese seman dances.<\/p>\n
Ita, who is from the Jakprom Foundation, or the Jakarta
\nPromotion Board, said films from several countries would be
\nscreened at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta from June 23 to June 25.<\/p>\n
\"These are also open to public and free of charge,\" Ita said.
