Inti to launch beepers, cellular phones next year<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): State telecommunications equipment maker PT Inti
\nplans to launch mini-beepers and cellular handsets for the
\nPersonal Handy-phone System (PHS) early next year.<\/p>\n
Company director Jopie Manduapessy said in Bandung, West Java,
\non Saturday that the beepers and the cellular handsets would be
\nofficially launched by President Soeharto.<\/p>\n
"The products will be launched during the inauguration of
\ntelecommunications year, which is 1997," he said.<\/p>\n
The beepers will be smaller than those currently found in the
\ndomestic market, he said. "The price will also be more
\nreasonable," the Antara new agency quoted Jopie as saying.<\/p>\n
The dimensions of the PHS terminal are 115mm in height, 43mm
\nin width and 25mm in length. It weighs 120 grams, including the
\nbattery. One of the lightest cellular handsets in the world, the
\nEricsson GH 388 is 130mm tall, 49mm wide, 23mm in length and 170
\ngrams in weight.<\/p>\n
Inti has set up PT Indoprima Mikroselindo, a joint venture
\nwith a number of partners including state-owned PT Indosat and PT
\nYamabri Komunikasindo, a company controlled by the Foundation of
\nMilitary Headquarters to operate the PHS next year.<\/p>\n
In addition to the planned PHS, there are currently some
\n500,000 cellular telephone users in Indonesia, using three
\ndifferent systems -- the Nordic Mobile Telephone, the Advanced
\nMobile Phone Service and the Global System for Mobile
\ncommunications (GSM).<\/p>\n
Inti also intends to cooperate with Philips of the Netherlands
\nto develop GSM handsets in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Company president Arsyad Ismael said that the company's
\nrevenues reached Rp 399 billion (US$169 million) for the January
\nto November period, around 33 percent above the original target.<\/p>\n
"By the end of this year, we expect to gain Rp 428 billion in
\ntotal revenues."<\/p>\n
Inti currently makes switching centrals, pay phones,
\ntelephones and card phones.<\/p>\n
The company will compete with PT Metro Media Raya in the
\nbeeper manufacturing business. Metro Media Raya -- an affiliated
\ncompany of PT Motorollain Corp., which operates Starko radio
\npaging -- started its operation last week.<\/p>\n
The lucrative telecommunications industry in Indonesia is
\nexpected to grow significantly in the next few years. However, no
\ncompany has yet to begin manufacturing cellular handset
\nterminals.<\/p>\n
A number of CT2 (the second generation of the cordless
\ntelephone system) handsets have been assembled in Batam, southern
\nSumatra. Goldtron of Singapore also plans to set up a cordless
\ntelephone assembling facility in the country. (icn)<\/p>",
