Internet-beeper service launched<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): PT Selarasindo Mulia and PT Bitnet Komunikasindo
\nhave launched a new service called Metronet, which allows
\nInternet users to send direct message to radio-pager (beeper)
\nusers in Indonesia without dialing the pager operator.<\/p>\n
The two firms launched the new service amid the stiffer
\ncompetition in the country's information and telecommunications
\nbusiness.<\/p>\n
PT Selarasindo is a nationwide beeper operator with the
\nMetrotel brand and Bitnet is an Internet service provider
\naffiliated with Elang Mahkota Tehnologi.<\/p>\n
Selarasindo's manager, Hendra Wijaya, said here over the
\nweekend: \"With Metronet, Internet users worldwide are able to
\nsend messages direct to beeper users subscribing to Metrotel
\npagers. This may reduce phone bills. Metronet's service also
\noffers confidentiality because no operator is involved in message
\ndelivery.\"<\/p>\n
He said that although cellular phones, as telecommunications
\ntools, continued to dominate the telecommunications market,
\nbeepers remained a choice as a complementary device.<\/p>\n
Metronet services include Web pages and e-mail notification.<\/p>\n
The Web pages through http:\/\/www.metrotel.co.id will allow
\nmessage delivery service. Internet users have to know a beeper's
\nID and password to send a message to a Metrotel beeper user.<\/p>\n
E-Mail notification is valid for Bitnet account owners. The
\nservice informs of any incoming e-mail messages to Bitnet users
\nvia Metrotel pager, therefore they do not have to check their
\naccounts.<\/p>\n
Selarasindo Mulia, with its Metrotel beepers, is one of the
\nradio paging carriers licensed to operate nationally.<\/p>\n
There are currently 90 radio paging operators in Indonesia,
\nhalf of which are located in Jakarta. Ten of these 90 firms are
\nlicensed to operate nationally, including PT Telematrixindo with
\nits EasyCall, PT SkyTelindo with its Skytel, PT Duta Pertiwi
\nSantosa with its Starpage and PT Indolink First Pacific with its
\nIndolink. The other nationwide beepers are Starko, Nusa Page,
\nBuana Bintang Bayu and Gematel.<\/p>\n
Wijaya said that Metrotel, which was launched last year,
\ncurrently operates in the Greater Jakarta area and Bandung, West
\nJava.<\/p>\n
\"Metrotel will expand later this year its networks to major
\ncities in Java and Sumatra including Semarang, Yogyakarta,
\nSurakarta, Bali, Dumai and Medan,\" he said, adding that his
\ncompany would fully operate nationwide by 1999. (icn)<\/p>",
