International Physics Olympiad opens<\/p>\n

After a two-hour delay, the president opened the Olympiad,
\nwith some 500 contestants from 70 countries participating.<\/p>\n
The 33rd Physics Olympiad, held between July 22 and July 30,
\nis jointly organized by the International Physics Olympiad
\n(IPHO), the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and the
\nMinistry of National Education.<\/p>\n
This year's Physics Olympiad attracted 307 high school
\nparticipants and 195 instructors from 70 countries including
\nRussia, China, China Taipei, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Albania,
\nArmenia, Spain, Finland, Germany, Italy, Denmark, Switzerland,
\nMoldavia, Macedonia, Japan, Kenya, Iceland, Cuba and South
\nAfrica.<\/p>\n
First held in Warsaw, Poland in l967, the International
\nPhysics Olympiad has been the fertile ground to net young people
\nwith scientific prowess. Indonesia has been actively taking part
\nin the Olympiad since l993.<\/p>\n
Triyanta, chairman of the organizing committee, said
\nIndonesian students had shown their teeth in the international
\narena.<\/p>\n
During the l999 Physics Olympiad in Padova, Italy, Balinese
\nstudent I Made Agus Wirawan from Bangli High School grabbed a
\ngold medal.<\/p>\n
Another student, Agustinus Petter Sahanggamu from SMU 78 High
\nSchool in Jakarta, won a prestigious gold medal during the Asian
\nPhysics Olympiad in Singapore in May this year, a preceding event
\nto the International Olympiad.<\/p>\n
\"I am optimistic that the Indonesian team will be able to
\ncompete with their counterparts from overseas countries,\"
\nTriyanta said.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian team includes Agustinus, Evelyn Mintarno (SMUK
\nBPK Penabur I, Jakarta), Fajar Ardian (SMU Insan Cendikia,
\nSerpong), Christopher Hendriks (SMU Pelita Harapan, Karawaci) and
\nWidagdo Setiawan (SMUN I, Denpasar, Bali).<\/p>\n
The team members were selected from a national physics
\ncompetition.<\/p>\n
The Olympiad will constitute a series of written competitions
\nand scientific experiments as well as scientific exhibitions. The
\nwinners of each category will be announced on July 29.<\/p>",
