Every year on 27 June, the world observes International MSME Day,
also known as Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day. MSMEs are
crucial for job creation, reducing hunger and poverty, and stimulating
entrepreneurship and innovation. According to the United Nations, MSMEs
represent around 90 percent of businesses worldwide and contribute more
than 70 percent of global employment. In emerging markets, formal MSMEs
contribute up to 40 percent of national income (GDP).

Despite their significant economic and social contributions, MSMEs
face persistent challenges, including limited access to finance, weak
integration into regional and global value chains, and constrained
capacity for innovation and technology adoption. Strengthening the
resilience and competitiveness of MSMEs has become increasingly
important amid global economic uncertainty, climate pressures, and rapid
technological transformation.

Recognising their importance, the UN General Assembly designated 27
June as MSME Day to raise awareness of their contributions to
sustainable development and the global economy. The 2026 observance will
bring together senior government officials, representatives of
international and regional organisations, development finance
institutions, private sector leaders, and development partners.

The objectives for the 2026 celebration include acknowledging the
critical role of MSMEs, introducing flagship UNIDO initiatives such as
the ONE World Sustainability Awards, facilitating the signing of
partnership agreements and announcement of new projects, showcasing
beneficiary experiences and impact, and presenting international best
practices in MSME support, including insights from the China
International Small and Medium Enterprises Fair (CISMEF) and the
Regional Cooperation Council (RCC).

The public can participate by attending online and in-person events
organised by bodies such as the International Trade Centre, the
International Labour Organization, UNIDO, and the World Bank. Supporting
local small businesses and sharing information about them, as well as
learning more about the power of MSMEs through UN videos and online
resources, are also encouraged.
",
