The government has emphasised that waste management can no longer be\nconducted in a piecemeal fashion. Management must be integrated from\nupstream to downstream to address escalating waste volumes whilst\nopening new economic opportunities.<\/p>\n
Interior Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian stated that a comprehensive\napproach is key to handling the nation\u2019s waste problem systematically\nand sustainably. This was conveyed during the National Waste Management\nCoordination Meeting (Rakornas) 2026, themed \u201cCollaboration for\nIndonesia ASRI (Safe, Healthy, Clean, Beautiful)\u201d at Balai Kartini\nBuilding in Jakarta on Wednesday, 25 February.<\/p>\n
In his remarks, Tito revealed that Indonesia currently ranks among\nthe world\u2019s five largest waste producers and sits in third place as a\ncontributor of plastic waste to the ocean. He considered these\nconditions should serve as a momentum for collective evaluation. \u201cI just\nwant to add some data to ensure this event is not merely ceremonial but\nbecomes a wake-up call for the umpteenth time,\u201d Tito said.<\/p>\n
He emphasised that waste is not merely a cleanliness issue but also\ndirectly impacts public health and holds economic value if managed\nproperly.<\/p>\n
The Interior Minister outlined that waste management strategy can be\ndivided into three approaches: upstream-based, downstream-based, and\nintegrative. The upstream approach focuses on reducing waste at its\nsource, from households to village level.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe upstream-based approach is environment-based and\nhousehold-based. So each household takes action, each neighbourhood\ntakes action, RT, RW, villages for example, they implement reduce from\nthe beginning, reducing waste and then processing waste in their\nrespective environments,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
He cited several regions such as Banyuwangi, Klungkung, and Subang\nthat were deemed successful in implementing community-based waste\nmanagement through early sorting, thus reducing waste volume entering\nfinal processing facilities (TPA).<\/p>\n
Additionally, the Interior Minister highlighted the economic\npotential of organic waste processing through maggot farming or Black\nSoldier Fly (BSF) larvae cultivation. This innovation is deemed capable\nof reducing waste volume whilst generating value-added products such as\nanimal feed and fertiliser, in line with circular economy\nprinciples.<\/p>\n
On the downstream side, he stressed the importance of strengthening\nwaste transport and processing systems, particularly in urban areas with\nhigh volumes. Technology utilisation is considered a solution provided\nit is supported by consistent governance and monitoring.<\/p>\n
Through this Rakornas, the Interior Minister hopes waste management\nwill no longer be reactive but become a structured and sustainable\ncollaborative movement. \u201cCities stay clean because waste collection\nteams move quickly. So in the morning there is no waste,\u201d he\nconcluded.<\/p>\n
