Interest in literature<\/p>\n

Sometime ago, I held a book and manuscripts of literature
\nexhibition which ran for five days beginning on Jan. 25. The
\nexhibition was held at the HB Jassin Library Complex at Taman
\nIsmail Marzuki, Cikini Raya, Jakarta, and was sponsored by the
\nsame foundation.<\/p>\n
The exhibit attracted 20 members of the public each day,
\nmostly people interested in literature, students and journalists.
\nEndo Senggono, a member of staff at the HB Jassin library, thinks
\nthe lack of interest in literary works could be worse, which
\nbacks Taufik Ismail's opinion that Indonesian's interest in
\nliterature is in a deplorable state, particularly among the
\nyoung.<\/p>\n
Visitors to the HB Jassin library only amount to about 20 a
\nday, except when there is a special group tour.<\/p>\n
At the opening of the exhibit on Jan. 25, it was disclosed
\nthat the documentation system in Indonesia leaves much to be
\ndesired. The secondhand book market abroad is, reportedly, in a
\nmuch better state than the Indonesian national library.<\/p>\n
I can attest to that. The library of a secondhand bookshop
\ncalled Archives Book located in Brisbane, Australia has a
\ncomplete collection of antique books right up to the latest
\npublication. In comparison, secondhand bookshops in Indonesia
\nonly have backdated magazines and unmarketable first print
\ntextbooks.<\/p>\n
As a collector of serious literature, I appeal to other
\ncollectors such as Ong Hok Ham, Goenawan Mohammad, Wiratmo
\nSukito, Murti Bunanta, Ninok Laksono, Nirwan Dewanto, Korrie
\nLayun Rampan and others, to form a Book Collectors Forum. I would
\nalso like to address this plea to Suripan Sadi Hutomo and Sutanto
\nSupiadhy in Surabaya.<\/p>\n
Through this forum, a complete book documentation from the
\nperiod of Wali Songo until today, might be established. I believe
\nthe documentation of books should begin now and should put the
\nNational Library in Salemba, Jakarta, in the shadow.<\/p>\n
