'Inter-generation dialog could allay differences'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Although the process of one generation taking
\nover from the one before it is natural, it needs sincerity as
\nwell as mental and intellectual preparedness, according to City
\nMilitary chief Maj.Gen. Wiranto.<\/p>\n
\"For that reason, a communication forum in the form of inter-
\ngeneration dialog is necessary and useful,\" Wiranto said
\nyesterday when opening a discussion entitled The history of the
\nstruggle for independence and the implementation of the spirit of
\nthe 1945 generation in the development area.<\/p>\n
The 1945 generation refers to those who fought during
\nIndonesia's struggle for independence in the 1940s, culminating
\nin the country's success in gaining independence from the Dutch
\nyoke on Aug. 17, 1945.<\/p>\n
Representatives of the 1945 generation, activists of youth
\norganizations, members of non-governmental organizations as well
\nas university students and military officers took part in the
\none-day discussion held in conjunction with the 50th anniversary
\nof Indonesia's independence.<\/p>\n
Inter-generation dialogs, according to Wiranto, could help
\nbridge different perspectives between the generations, thus
\nfacilitating the process. \"Such dialogs need sincerity, honesty
\nand openness on the part of all involved.\"<\/p>\n
Maj.Gen (ret) Ahmadi, chief of the city branch of the 1945
\ngeneration council, said that it was impossible for Indonesia to
\nproclaim independence without physical revolution.<\/p>\n
He added that when the founding-fathers of the republic,
\nSukarno and Mohamad Hatta, jointly proclaimed Indonesia's
\nindependence it inspired other countries which were still under
\ncolonial rule to follow suit.<\/p>\n
He urged the younger generation to inherit the spirit of the
\n1945 generation, including the values of heroism, togetherness,
\nunity and the readiness to sacrifice everything for the sake of
\nthe public.<\/p>\n
A participant representing the younger generation stated that
\nthe present generation is facing different problems and
\nchallenges, since the generation has to face global competition
\nwhich needs quality human resources.<\/p>\n
Ahmadi responded that as long as the new generation tries to
\nkeep the 1945 spirit alive and remain loyal to the people such
\ndifferences pose no problem.<\/p>\n
\"The spirit will inspire the young generation to struggle for
\nthe challenges,\" he pointed out, adding that in essence the
\nchallenges faced by the 1945 generation during the struggle for
\nindependence and those faced by the present generation were the
\nsame.<\/p>\n
A myriad of activities are now being held nationwide to
\ncelebrate the 50th anniversary of the republic.<\/p>\n
The Monas square in Central Jakarta is the center stage for
\nactivities being held by the city administration to commemorate
\nIndependence Day, which will peak on Aug. 19 with the program
\ncalled Kenduri Nasional (National Fiesta) which is expected to be
\nattended by more than 70,000 people.<\/p>\n
Wiranto called on the people to help keep public order and
\nsecurity during the celebrations. He said he had instructed his
\npersonnel to be on guard for any untoward incidents that might
\nhappen during the fiesta.<\/p>\n
\"But the public should also be cooperative by helping the
\nofficers keep order and security. Let's work together to prevent
\nany incidents that could taint the greatness and the significant
\nmeaning of Independence Day,\" he said. (29)<\/p>",
