Inter-city body tackles capital's relentless growth<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Inter-Indonesian Municipalities
\nOrganization, BKS-AKSI, is helping the government control the
\ncapital's relentless growth.<\/p>\n
An official of the organization said yesterday that it is
\ninvolved in a program called \"Bangga Suka Desa\", which is under
\nthe auspices of the National Family Planning Board.<\/p>\n
The phrase is an abbreviation of Pembangunan Keluarga Modern
\nDalam Suasana Kota di Pedesaan, which means developing modern
\nfamilies in villages with a suburban atmosphere.<\/p>\n
\"The organization has been preparing two villages in Greater
\nJakarta as pilot projects,\" Untung Widodo, the head of the
\nprogram at BKS-AKSI, said.<\/p>\n
The villages are Jogrek and Taman Rahayu in the Bogor regency.<\/p>\n
Untung said the program is aimed at controlling urbanization,
\nincluding efforts to improve villages' economic circumstances.<\/p>\n
The organization helps villagers increase their income through
\nvarious forms of support given to existing industries, he said.<\/p>\n
Untung said a women's underwear home industry in Jogrek, and a
\nfemale accessories industry in Taman Rahayu are among the
\neconomic operations earmarked for future assistance by the
\norganization in the last six months.<\/p>\n
He added the full project is expected to begin early next
\nyear.<\/p>\n
Untung explained that the organization will assist in the
\nproduction, distribution and marketing of products.<\/p>\n
\"For example, we plan to order three containers of accessories
\nfrom Taman Rahayu to be exported to South Korea because companies
\nfrom Jakarta cannot meet the demand,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Untung said the program, which will eventually be expanded
\nnationwide, is currently limited to Java.<\/p>\n
Hopefully, he said, it will dissuade villagers from going to
\nJakarta to find a better life.<\/p>\n

\nM. Rais, said on Thursday that the central government should
\ndevelop other cities to control urbanization growth.<\/p>\n
Economists say over 60 percent of the country's money
\ncirculates in Jakarta, attracting migrants seeking a share.<\/p>\n
The latest records indicate that the city's birth rate is 1.38
\npercent a year, while urbanization growth is annually 1.03
\npercent.<\/p>\n
The United Nations predicts Jakarta will be home to 21.2
\nmillion people by 2015, making it the fifth most populous city in
\nthe world.<\/p>\n
The municipality's estimate is lower. It has projected that
\nwith a population growth of 2.4 percent per year, the number of
\nresidents in Jakarta in 2015 will be 15.2 million people. (yns)<\/p>",
