Intel to help make 'digital Vietnam'<\/p>\n
HANOI: The world's largest chipmaker Intel signed on Wednesday
\nan agreement with the Vietnamese government to improve
\naccessibility of information technologies throughout the country,
\nthe company's CEO said.<\/p>\n
Intel president Paul Otellini said the foundation would aim to
\nboost communication infrastructure across ministries, government,
\nprovinces and various organizations.<\/p>\n
The company also wants to help Vietnam develop a robust local
\nIT industry and increase computerization in schools.<\/p>\n
Otellini denied revealing how much the company would spend on
\nthe program.<\/p>\n
Vietnam is a \"wakening dragon\", he said during a press
\nconference in Hanoi.<\/p>\n
\"Its economic success will depend on how quickly PC's and
\naffordable broadband connectivity are made available and how
\nwidely e-government, digital health care, an IT-literate
\nworkforce, local industry and digital province initiative can be
\ndeveloped.\"<\/p>\n
The American giant announced on Tuesday it would invest US$400
\nmillion to set up a chip testing and assembly plant in India. \"We
\nhave no current plans\" to build a plant in Vietnam, Otellini
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Although he said the agreement includes no commercial
\nintentions, Otellini added the company was already enjoying
\ngrowing sales in Vietnam.<\/p>\n
\"Vietnam is the fasted growing PC market\" among the 10 members
\nof the Association of South-East Asian Nations, Otellini said.
