Every year on 12 June, the World Day Against Child Labour is\nobserved, marking a global commitment to building a world free from\nchild exploitation.<\/p>\n
According to the United Nations, the International Labour\nOrganization (ILO) launched this day in 2002 to focus international\nattention on the scale of child labour and the necessary actions to\neliminate it. Each year, the date unites governments, employers\u2019 and\nworkers\u2019 organisations, civil society, and millions of people worldwide\nto highlight the suffering of child labourers and the steps required to\nassist them.<\/p>\n
It is important to note that not all work performed by children is\nclassified as child labour that must be abolished. Participation by\nchildren or adolescents in work that does not affect their health,\npersonal development, or education is generally considered positive.\nThis includes activities such as helping parents at home, assisting in\nfamily businesses, or earning pocket money outside of school hours and\nduring holidays. Such activities contribute to a child\u2019s development and\nfamily well-being by providing skills and experience that prepare them\nfor productive adult life.<\/p>\n
Child labour, however, refers to work that is harmful and dangerous\nto children, violating both international and national laws. It can\ndeprive children of the opportunity to attend school or force them to\nendure the double burden of both studying and working. The forms of\nchild labour that must be eliminated include:<\/p>\n
All forms of the worst forms of child labour, such as slavery or\npractices similar to slavery, the use of children for prostitution, or\nfor illegal activities;<\/p><\/li>\n
Work performed by children below the minimum legal age for such\nwork, as defined by national legislation in accordance with\ninternational standards.<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
The worst forms of child labour involve children being enslaved,\nseparated from their families, exposed to serious hazards and diseases,\nor left to fend for themselves on the streets of major cities, often at\na very young age. Whether specific types of work are classified as\n\u2018child labour\u2019 depends on the child\u2019s age, the type and hours of work,\nthe working conditions, and the specific objectives of each nation.<\/p>\n
Currently, approximately 218 million children are working worldwide,\nmany of whom work full-time. They are unable to attend school and have\nlittle to no time to play. Many lack proper nutrition or adequate care,\nlosing their opportunity to experience childhood. More than half are\nexposed to the worst forms of child labour, including hazardous\nenvironments, slavery, forced labour, illegal activities such as drug\ntrafficking and prostitution, and involvement in armed conflict.<\/p>\n
Under the slogan \u2018Red card to child labour: Fair play for children,\ndecent work for adults\u2019, the 2026 World Day Against Child Labour\ncampaign calls for strengthened actions in policies that prevent child\nlabour and withdraw children from it.
