The article argues that the concept of Insan Kamil (the Perfect Human) is not an abstract or artistic construct but an ontological and historical reality culminating in Prophet Muhammad. Drawing on Ibn Arabi, al-Jili, and al-Ghazali, it presents the Prophet as the ultimate manifestation of divine names and ethical perfection. The piece also notes Western thinkers such as Carlyle, Tolstoy, and Hart who recognised Muhammad's unique spiritual and social integrity.

The term Insan Kamil is often misunderstood as an abstract concept, a
metaphorical symbol, or even an artistic imagination of the ideal human.
This misunderstanding grows stronger when the principle of freedom of
expression is used as a basis to represent—or even distort—the figure of
Prophet Muhammad through art and caricature. In the classical treasury
of Islamic Sufism and theology, however, Insan Kamil is not the result
of imaginative construction, but an ontological and historical reality
that culminates in the person of Prophet Muhammad. This article aims to
affirm that Insan Kamil is a normative and epistemological concept with
a strong foundation in the thought of Ibn Arabi, al-Jili, and
al-Ghazali, and that it resonates with Western spiritual humanism’s
admiration for the figure of the complete human.

In his works Fusus al-Hikam and al-Futuhat al-Makkiyyah, Muhyiddin
Ibn Arabi places Insan Kamil as the most perfect manifestation of the
Divine Names. Insan Kamil is the only creature capable of gathering all
divine names and attributes in a balanced manner. Ibn Arabi states that
the perfect human is the one who gathers all the realities of the
universe. Yet he does not leave this concept floating; he affirms that
the absolute peak of Insan Kamil is Prophet Muhammad, while other humans
can only approach it relatively through following him. Thus, Insan Kamil
is not a subjective ideal human, but a prophetic reality with a clear
historical centre and identity.

Abdul Karim al-Jili, a spiritual disciple of Ibn Arabi, clarifies
this concept in his work al-Insan al-Kamil fi Ma’rifat al-Awakhir wa
al-Awa’il. He affirms that the Muhammadan Reality is the most perfect
manifestation of existence. For al-Jili, Insan Kamil is not merely a
highly moral human; it is the cosmic axis through which the balance of
nature is maintained. Prophet Muhammad is the final and universal model,
not merely an Arab cultural figure. Al-Jili explicitly rejects the
understanding that Insan Kamil can be freely represented through
imagination or art unbound by propriety and truth.

Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, although he does not often use the term Insan
Kamil terminologically, builds its ethical and spiritual foundations
systematically in Ihya’ Ulum al-Din. For al-Ghazali, human perfection
lies in the integration of knowledge and action. He affirms that Prophet
Muhammad is the most perfect human in real life—not a philosopher in an
ivory tower, but a leader, husband, educator, statesman, and complete
servant of God. In this context, Insan Kamil is not mere metaphysical
speculation, but an ethical example that can be historically
verified.

Interestingly, the concept of the perfect human does not live only in
Islam. A number of Western thinkers—although they do not use the
terminology Insan Kamil—acknowledge the existence of a human figure who
achieved the highest moral and spiritual integrity. Thomas Carlyle, in
On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History, calls Prophet
Muhammad a silent great soul, one of those who cannot but be earnest.
Carlyle strongly rejects the notion of Prophet Muhammad as a fabricated
or manipulative figure, and instead views him as the peak of existential
honesty. Leo Tolstoy admired the moral teachings of Prophet Muhammad and
called him an ethical reformer of humanity. He considered the Prophet’s
perfection to lie in the unity of teaching and life, a chief
characteristic of Insan Kamil in Islamic Sufism. Michael H. Hart, in The
100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History, places
Prophet Muhammad first because of his success in uniting spiritual and
social authority—a characteristic that in Islam is called al-kamil
al-insani.

From an academic standpoint, making Prophet Muhammad an object of
free artistic expression without propriety is not scholarly freedom, but
an epistemological error. Insan Kamil is a normative subject, not an
aesthetic object. Its representation is bound by truth, propriety, and
historical testimony. Expression that contradicts its essence is not
interpretation, but distortion. The concept of Insan Kamil in Islam is
mature ontologically, ethically, and historically. Ibn Arabi provided
its metaphysical foundation, al-Jili affirmed the centrality of Prophet
Muhammad as the Muhammadan Reality, and al-Ghazali grounded it in the
ethics of real life. Recognition from Western figures strengthens the
view that the figure of the complete human is not a religious myth, but
a historical reality. Therefore, understanding Insan Kamil demands
knowledge before expression, propriety before freedom, and truth before
imagination.
",
