Inquiry team arrives in Ambon<\/p>\n
The much-criticized independent team set up by the government
\nto investigate violations of the law in Maluku arrived in Ambon
\non Wednesday to start their probe into all communal crimes
\ncommitted during the three-year sectarian conflict.<\/p>\n
The team, led by I Wayan Karya, a senior aid to the
\ncoordinating minister for political and security affairs, will
\nhave six months to carry out its investigation and report its
\nfindings to the President.<\/p>\n
Wayan said his team had already questioned former Maluku
\nPolice chief Sr. Comr. Karyono and the former commander of the
\nnow defunct Pattimura Military Resort Command, Col. Hikayat, in
\nJakarta prior to its departure for the province.<\/p>\n
\"We hope we will be able to uncover all the legal violations
\nthat occurred during the three years of conflict, and bring all
\nof the perpetrators to justice,\" he told reporters upon the
\nteam's arrival at the city's airport.<\/p>\n
During the investigation, the team would question local
\nofficials, including Maluku Governor Saleh Latuconsina, Pattimura
\nMilitary Commander Maj. Gen. Djoko Santoso, Maluku Police chief
\nBrig. Gen. Soenarko Danu Ardianto, local legislators, as well as
\nlocal figures and members of the feuding communities.<\/p>\n
The team has drawn criticism as it includes government
\nofficials, and police and military officers.<\/p>\n
The team was established to follow up on the Malino peace
\naccord, which was signed by representatives of the conflicting
\nfactions on February 12, 2002.<\/p>\n
The team is expected to investigate a litany of bloodthirsty
\nincidents, including the April 28 attack on the predominantly
\nChristian village of Soya in Ambon, which claimed at least 14
