Inmarsat Mini-M launched<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): State-owned PT Indosat will launch today its new
\nservice, the Global Express Phone-7 or the Inmarsat Mini-M, a new
\ninternational call service using International Maritime
\nSatellite's (Inmarsat) networks.<\/p>\n
Indosat's public relations manager, J.B. Basuki, said the new
\nservice would be available through Inmarsat satellite networks on
\nthe geo-stationery orbit.<\/p>\n
\"The Inmarsat Mini-M is designed for facsimile, data, voice
\ncommunications and Internet used on smaller terminals like
\nnotebooks,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said the service would cover areas not covered by normal
\ntelephone lines and cellular phones.<\/p>\n
Inmarsat services are set for both voice and data
\ntelecommunications from any point on land, sea or in the air.
\nInmarsat, operating its own telecommunications satellites, is an
\ninternational organization in Britain grouping various companies
\nthroughout the world. Indosat joined it in 1987.<\/p>\n
Indosat operates the Inmarsat B and M earth station, in
\nJatiluhur, West Java.<\/p>\n
Basuki said a portable terminal for Inmarsat Mini-M cost about
\nUS$5,000, while call charges started at $3 a minute. (icn)<\/p>",
