        "content": "<p>&apos;Information on Sukarno distorted during New Order era&apos;<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Political restrictions imposed by the New Order <br>\nregime have contributed to the younger generations&apos; ignorance <br>\nabout founding president Sukarno, Guruh Irianto Soekarnoputra <br>\nsaid during a book launch here on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;During the New Order period we could not talk about Sukarno <br>\nin a proper way. Whatever information there was about Sukarno <br>\nsometimes I feel was distorted,&quot; said Sukarno&apos;s youngest son, who <br>\nis a noted artist in his own right.<\/p>\n<p>During the New Order era, Sukarno was a frequent target of <br>\npolitical attacks.<\/p>\n<p>A series of books on Sukarno&apos;s thoughts on democracy, <br>\neconomics, international affairs and Islam, and a biography by <br>\nDr. Lambert J. Giebels, a Dutch political scientist, were <br>\nlaunched at the Hotel Santika in Jakarta. All of the books are <br>\npublished by Grasindo.<\/p>\n<p>Film clips of Sukarno from the 1950s and 1960s were shown at <br>\nthe opening of the event, receiving a warm applause from an <br>\naudience of about 400.<\/p>\n<p>The book launch is one of numerous events being put on by a <br>\nJakarta-based committee, of which Guruh is a board member, to <br>\nmark the 100th anniversary of Sukarno&apos;s birth.<\/p>\n<p>Guruh, who heads the Bung Karno Foundation, unveiled his plan <br>\nto establish the Sukarno Center, which will comprise a museum, <br>\nlibrary, research center and the various collections of Sukarno.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;All of the collections of Sukarno will be devoted to the <br>\npeople,&quot; Guruh said, while making an appeal for financial support <br>\nfor the multibillion rupiah project.<\/p>\n<p>Sukarno was known as a great art lover and an ardent collector <br>\nof artwork.<\/p>\n<p>The event was highlighted by addresses from committee chairman <br>\nDahlan Ranuwihardja and historian Taufik Abdullah, and closed by <br>\na question and answer session led by Kris Biantoro.
