Information about Sukarno 'distorted' during New Order<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Political restrictions imposed by the New Order
\nregime have contributed to the younger generations' ignorance
\nabout founding president Sukarno, Guruh Irianto Soekarnoputra
\nsaid during a book launch here on Saturday.<\/p>\n
\"During the New Order period we could not talk about Sukarno
\nin a proper way. Whatever information there was about Sukarno
\nsometimes I feel was distorted,\" said Sukarno's youngest son, who
\nis a noted artist in his own right.<\/p>\n
During the New Order era, Sukarno was a frequent target of
\npolitical attacks.<\/p>\n
A series of books on Sukarno's thoughts on democracy,
\neconomics, international affairs and Islam, and a biography by
\nDr. Lambert J. Giebels, a Dutch political scientist, were
\nlaunched at the Hotel Santika in Jakarta. All of the books are
\npublished by Grasindo.<\/p>\n
Film clips of Sukarno from the 1950s and 1960s were shown at
\nthe opening of the event, receiving a warm applause from an
\naudience of about 400.<\/p>\n
The book launch is one of numerous events being put on by a
\nJakarta-based committee, of which Guruh is a board member, to
\nmark the 100th anniversary of Sukarno's birth.<\/p>\n
Guruh, who heads the Bung Karno Foundation, unveiled his plan
\nto establish the Sukarno Center, which will comprise a museum,
\nlibrary, research center and the various collections of Sukarno.<\/p>\n
\"All of the collections of Sukarno will be devoted to the
\npeople,\" Guruh said, while making an appeal for financial support
\nfor the multibillion rupiah project.<\/p>\n
Sukarno was known as a great art lover and an ardent collector
\nof artwork.<\/p>\n
The event was highlighted by addresses from committee chairman
\nDahlan Ranuwihardja and historian Taufik Abdullah, and closed
\nwith a question and answer session led by Kris Biantoro. (hbk)<\/p>",
