        "content": "<p>Info system installed to control floods<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The government now has both manual and automatic<br>\ninformation systems to warn people of floods after a computerized<br>\nsystem to provide accurate and continuous data on water levels<br>\nwas set up in May.<\/p>\n<p>The automatic system is online at all times. It was set up to<br>\ncomplement the current manual information system.<\/p>\n<p>\"The establishment of the dual information systems of flood<br>\ncontrol will pass flood warnings on to the government and local<br>\nadministration officials who can then warn the public,\" the<br>\nmanager of the Ciliwung-Cisadane river basin development project,<br>\nSiswoko, told The Jakarta Post yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>He added that with early information on real water levels<br>\nupstream, those lower down can react properly.<\/p>\n<p>\"The new technology, called Supervisory Control and Data<br>\nAcquisition (Scada) has 24 stations in Bogor, Depok, Bekasi and<br>\nJakarta and four remote terminal units in Jakarta,\"<\/p>\n<p>He said the Canadian-French technology provides updated water<br>\nlevel data from 13 downstream rivers here and at three upstream<br>\nsites of the Ciliwung and Pesanggrahan rivers in Bogor, Depok and<br>\nBekasi.<\/p>\n<p>He added that monitoring terminals were installed in his<br>\noffice on Jl. Inspeksi Tarum Barat, East Jakarta, and three more<br>\nat the public works offices.<\/p>\n<p>The old manual information system uses walkie-talkie radio<br>\nthrough which picket officials in Bogor, Depok and Bekasi can<br>\ncommunicate water levels every half hour to other picket<br>\nofficials in Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>\"With the dual information system we hope that both the<br>\nofficials in charge and the public can take proper steps to<br>\nanticipate floods,\" Siswoko said.<\/p>\n<p>Siswoko said that whatever technology is applied, Jakarta will<br>\nstill be flooded, because it is too near sealevel.<\/p>\n<p>Siswoko warned that floods as serious as those in January and<br>\nFebruary this year could happen this rainy season.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the public misguidedly believes that floods that<br>\nbad happen only in every 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>\"A flood like the one in January has a probability of 20<br>\nyears, meaning similar or even worse flooding may reoccur sooner<br>\nor later within 20 years,\" said Siswoko.<\/p>\n<p>The January and February floods killed 30 people and caused Rp<br>\n90 billion in total losses.
