Influence of Dutch language<\/p>\n
Last year I read in your newspaper an article concerning the
\norigin and the future development of Bahasa Indonesia. I was
\nastonished to notice that the writer (I don't remember his name)
\napparently did not know that there are about five thousand words
\nderived from the Dutch language in the Indonesian language.<\/p>\n
I was again astonished when I read the article by Mr. Setiono
\nin your Oct. 16 edition to discover that a lot of examples given
\nof words supposed to be of English origin were not so. In fact,
\nwithout exception all examples mentioned in the article were
\ndrawn from the Dutch language. Although they were written
\nslightly differently, they were pronounced almost the same as in
\npresent day Holland.<\/p>\n
I often have the impression that emotional contemplations
\nobstruct a scientific approach to the fact that the Dutch
\ninfluences are a reality.<\/p>\n
The English as well as the French imposed their languages in
\ntheir colonies, the Dutch did not. On the contrary, they promoted
\nand used themselves what was called \"Maleis\", which was derived
\nfrom Malay.<\/p>\n
A discussion about the origin of Bahasa Indonesia without
\nmentioning these facts is not complete.<\/p>\n
