Infantry Brigade celebrates it's 31st anniversary<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The City Infantry Brigade, one of the elite
\nsecurity forces overseen by the Greater Jakarta Military
\nCommand, celebrated its 31st anniversary at its headquarters in
\nCondet, East Jakarta, yesterday.<\/p>\n
In his celebration speech, the Jakarta Military commander,
\nMaj. Gen. Wiranto, gave his orders to brigade members to wipe
\nout any public disturbances that could possibly roil the city.<\/p>\n
"We'll never allow the development of such a problem," Wiranto
\nsaid in his speech read by his Chief of Staff, Brig. Gen. Sutiyoso
\n(second from left, foreground, above picture).<\/p>\n
The brigade, locally named Brigif-1 Pam Ibukota Jaya Sakti, has
\nrecorded a series of success stories in its operations, from
\nquelling demonstrations and curbing student brawls to subduing
\nwarring neighborhood disputes.<\/p>\n
"One of the most prestigious records of this brigade is its
\nremarkable success in securing the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation
\n(APEC) forum held here recently," Wiranto said.<\/p>\n
Everyday, Jakartans can see brigade members roaring down the
\nstreets on their motorcycles (picture below) around the city to help
\nsafeguard security in the capital city, a number of which are
\nequipped with beepers to help them arrive at the scene of a crime
\nimmediately.<\/p>\n
According to the brigade commander, Col. Romulo R. Simbolon, his
\nbattalion has not yet had any problems carrying out their tasks.<\/p>\n
"The only problem we have is how to be professional," Romulo told
\nreporters after the ceremony.<\/p>\n
During the ceremony, the added attractions found in a number of
\nearlier events were absent and Sutiyoso simply inspected the
\nbattalions and anti-riot forces before reading Wiranto's speech.
